Description

The tray is actually a bowl with quite detailed and varying patterns, all woven with multiple tones of brown. The bowl dimensions are 18 3/4″ x 14″ x 2 1/2″

Handwoven fiber baskets and trays attributed to Papua New Guinea. Traditional geometric motifs including starburst, floral, and spiral d4signs. Acquired as Papua New Guinea basketry. Construction, materials, and design are consistent with basketry traditions of New Guinea, though exact regional origin has not been independently verified. The baskets and trays are:

  • Flat, coiled woven trays or plaques
  • Natural and dark-dyed fiber construction
  • Geometric starburst/sunburst motifs
  • Finely executed twining or coiled weaving
  • Designs based on radial symmetry rather than figurative imagery
